Projects are the heartbeat of our company.

Flywheel has the versatility to construct a wide range of projects and we will work with you to tailor our approach to your needs. One of the most important decisions you can make is who’s going to be there for you not in year one, but in year 20 or 25.

Our projects often range across large sites, and are frequently multi-roof installations with complex interconnection and deployment strategies.

Abrams Hall

01

The centerpiece of the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center, this building was redeveloped to be housing for previously homeless military veterans and senior assisted-living residences.

Abrams Hall, named after the Army’s General Abrams, who was also honored as the namesake of the famous M1 tank, is part of the large multi-building redevelopment effort on the Walter Reed campus in Northwest DC. As a community solar system, the array generates over 568 MW annually, providing no-cost solar power to 113 District households through the District of Columbia’s Solar for All program.

Perrington Condominium

02

The solar PV system generates almost 50% of the building’s electricity needs and the solar thermal system offsets 30% of the building’s natural gas use.

Unlike many newer buildings in the District that have individual electric meters and HVAC equipment, Perrington Condominiums is master metered for electricity and has centralized heating and domestic hot water systems. These legacy systems presented an opportunity to deploy a multi-layered energy solution to not only reduce electricity use with solar PV — but also to substantially offset on-site natural gas use through the addition of solar thermal panels. These panels generate thermal energy for use in the building’s domestic hot water and space heating systems.

Fairfax Village

03

This community solar system generates over 2,339 MW hours annually, providing no-cost solar power to 556 households through DC’s Solar for All program.

Ranging across 35 acres in the District’s Ward 7 neighborhood, Fairfax Village is a community of over 900 condos and townhomes. This project involved a multi-year deployment of solar located on roofs, garage buildings, carports, and included a ground mount array installation on an underutilized field.

Nicholas Landing

04

A unique project by the Housing Commission of Talbot County, Nicholas Landing is a nine-unit modular infill project located in historic Easton, Maryland.

The project is designed for net zero energy performance, and it is supported by the State of Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. We provided energy consulting services for net zero energy design, and we installed the rooftop solar array. Comprised of two buildings with varied roof lines that match neighboring historic homes, the rooftop arrays were divided into nine unique systems to provide power directly to the residential units. The Housing Commission of Talbot owns this PV system, and provides the energy to residents at no cost.

The 2nd SunStyle “Dragonscale” solar shingle installation in the United States, following the Google headquarters in California.

This innovative project replaced a flat roof on a small apartment building with a new pitched roof that was in turn topped with structural glass solar shingles from SunStyle. This project was the second installation in the US after the Google Headquarters roof in California. Dubbed the “Dragonscale” roof for its diamond pattern, the electricity generated by this solar installation provides no cost energy to low- and moderate-income DC families through the Solar for All program.
